We recently put on a red carpet event, and instead of buying or renting those fancy stanchions and ropes, we decided to make our own. The poles are made out of PVC pipe with 3 layered wood bases and spray painted gold. The ropes are made out of pipe insulators covered with red velvet sleeves that Faith made. We used eye bolts and fasteners to connect the ropes to the poles. They were a lot of fun to make and looked great. We got the basic plans from crackerjacktheater.com, and then made it our own. Cracker Jack Theater has lots of other fun DIY projects like this, so check them out.
The red carpet rope stanchions you made are fabulous and thank you for sharing.
I’m trying to make some myself for an event this scheduled for Sun., 12/20/15 and was wondering if Faith had a instructions re: making the fabric sleeves for the ropes? Oh and I don’t know how to sew, lol 🙂
What was the sizes of 3 wood bases and where can I get instructions from
Hi Brynne,
For the bases we cut pieces of plywood into 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8 squares and nailed together. We cut holes for the PVC pipe and made wood shanks to tighten them into the wood bases. For the basic plan We used crackerjacktheater.com. I think the base that they made was round, but for the sake of time we just cut our base into squares. It was a lot of fun to make. Good luck!
Hi Mike
I can’t find the info from crackerjackertheatre.com
Can u please send me the link
This post is several years old, so it’s very possible that the link and/or site is no longer available. What questions did you have about your project?
Mike
what is the length of the pvc pipes
Hi Rose,
The PVC pipes are about 3 feet in length, which puts them about waste high for the average person’s height.
Hope this helps.
Hello what did you use to attach the ends of the rope to the stanchion?
Hi Chrystal. I’ve attached a few closeup pics which might help you out. We drilled a hole in the stanchion and inserted a large eye hook and glued a smaller eye hook to the foam inside the rope. Then we connected them using a quick release bridle snap. Hope this helps.

4×4 inches
Yes, it is not perfect spray painting the PVC. I suggest lots of coats.
What did you use for the ropes?
We used foam pipe insulation and then stuffed in velvet sleeves that we made.
